A Habit For The Perfect Morning Routine 🌱

bal·anced

adjective

Definition: A condition in which different elements are equal or in correct proportions.

Invest the first hour of your day into yourself, and it will pay returns for the remaining 23. That’s the philosophy Robin Sharma - one of the world’s top leadership experts - lives by.

In a time where the line between work and life is often a blur, a balanced morning routine is the key to productivity and being an effective leader.

Sharma’s 20-20-20 splits the first hour of the day into three segments:

  • 20 minutes of exercise

  • 20 minutes of reflection

  • 20 minutes of learning

I have been using this method for about 9 months now, and I start every day with unmatched levels of motivation and productivity.

Here is how I have integrated it into my routine:

5:30am: Wake up

5:35: Journal in my 5-minute journal and notebook

6am: 1 mile walk

6:20am: Breakfast

6:45am: Read

But let’s get into why this works…

SCIENCE:

Exercise stimulates endorphins, reflection helps reduce stress, and learning taps into your mental acuity - together enhancing your mood, calming your brain, and improving your cognitive ability.

Countless people who use this method are astonished by how much it affects their daily lives.

IMPACT:

If you start your morning off strong with motivation and productivity, stimulating the essential parts of your brain, you will accomplish much more throughout the day.

IMPLEMENTATION:

Why habits? Your time is valuable and limited; you don’t need more complex systems. My goal is to provide you with simple, effective tools to support your physical and mental well-being and make you more efficient and conserve mental energy. (read more)

Here are some ways you can structure your morning routine around the 3 segments:

Step 1: Exercise

You could go for a short run, walk 1 mile, or do a HIIT workout.

Step 2: Reflection

This could be journaling, doing guided meditation, or silent meditation.

Step 3: Learning

Some ideas are reading a book, playing an instrument, or learning a new language.

TOOLKIT:

In every edition of Creatures of Habit, I feature a product to help you implement this week’s habit.

CHALLENGE:

This week, try the 20-20-20 morning routine at least once. See how it affects the rest of your day.
